Johnson lost his life in a collision between Engine Company #2
and Engine Company #4 on the morning of May 20th
1930. Both engines were responding to an alarm at 11:10 A.M. for
406 Dolorosa St. Fireman Johnson was riding the running board
and operating the hand-cranked siren while in response to the
alarm. Bystanders stated that both fire trucks were traveling at
about forty-five miles per hour when they collided at the
intersection of West Commerce and Main Avenue. Several of the
companies’ firemen were thrown to the pavement. Fireman Johnson
was caught between both of the apparatus and sustained severe
injuries to his lower torso. He was transported to Santa Rosa
Infirmary and was pronounced dead one hour after the accident.
