The San Antonio Fire Department operates a
first class Emergency Medical Service. The majority of the fire
stations are equipped with a fully staffed advance life support
EMS unit.
Currently San Antonio Fire
Department's EMS utilizes 29
full- time units and as many as 8 Peak
Period Units. There are also 4 EMS supervisors operating though
out the city.
SAFD is routinely recognized as
being one of the best trained and equipped emergency medical
services operating anywhere in the world.
San Antonio Fire Department's EMS program
began operation March1, 1974 with unit 808 (now Medic 8) making the first
response. At the beginning of the program there was 7 Modulance brand
ambulances and 55 paramedics. During the first year of operation EMS responded
to 24,336 calls for service.
